  I am an experienced molecular biologist and an expert in the inherited neuro- and cardio-degenerative mitochondrial disorder, Friedreich ataxia (FA). I was the founding Scientific Director of the Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), I was the primary organizer of the first three international FA research conferences, and I have published widely in the field. With funding from an NIH Director's Transformative Research Award, I co-invented and validated the first random shRNA-expressing libraries. My lab has used these libraries in an unbiased, pooled approach to identify shRNA sequences that confer selected phenotypes (as shRNAs or as siRNAs) in cell-culture models, including for FA, and we have used gene-expression and bioinformatic analyses of hit shRNAs to identify conventional chemical-compound therapeutic candidates that recapitulate phenotypes induced by our shRNAs. I also have experience in more conventional drug development, specifically for FA: we designed and implemented conventional high-throughput screens, developed mammalian cell-culture and zebrafish models for secondary testing, and are working with medicinal chemists on hit-optimization. We are also using our FA models to test compounds developed by pharmaceutical companies and other academic investigators. I have completed most of the course requirements for a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology here at the University of Pennsylvania, including graduate-level courses in statistics, machine learning, and advanced Bayesian data analytics. I am a board-certified molecular genetic pathologist, with more than 25 years of clinical experience, and I am the Chief of the Division of Pathology Informatics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
